Public Relations Writing

In this section, you'll find the writing services I offer in the field of public relations.  Public relations is basically the projection of your business or personal image as well as your internal or external communications to others.

Small one-person companies will find their public relations materials are almost always external since they don't have internal staff to communicate with (barring split personalities, of course!) while a larger company or corporation will often have both internal and external communications.

Public relations writing goes beyond the press release and encompasses internal & external newsletters, entire press kits, public service announcements (PSA's), brochures, annual reports, speech writing, feature articles, and more.

If you are communicating in a non-advertising way, then you are in the waters of public relations writing.  Of course, we want press and press increases business, but the focus of public relations materials is generally on news rather than advertising.

Getting press is much better than advertising - it's less expensive too.  Much larger than the cost saving is the third party validation of the press.  When a publication writes about you or your business, it's like an endorsement and it's priceless.  It takes skill to write public relations materials that aren't rejected by editors.

If your materials sound like a thinly-disguised advertisement, you won't get press and your materials will get tossed into the round file.  If your materials sound like news, you have a VERY good chance of getting press.  How to make your news "newsy"?  Leave it a to a pro ;).  A bad press release is a waste of time and money.  Having a choice between a bad press release and no press release, I opt for no press release.  If you're going to do something, it worth the time, effort and dollars to do it right.
